"Light Guys"...Ask to See Their Work First!

Not long ago a customer brought in a Gold Wing for a trike conversion. When we pulled off the seat and found this. (Click pictures for closer view.)

A few weeks later we saw another wiring job from the same guy.

A few of the issues we found between the bikes include:

  • Solid copper used instead of stranded wire
  • Wire run through chassis contact points without loom
  • Spark source near gas cap (electrical switch in overflow tray)
  • Fixed wiring runs in service areas (no way to disconnect/remove panels)
  • Improper adhesives in severe service areas (duct tape under wheel well)
  • Exposed hot leads
  • Oversized crimp connectors

I've posted these pictures for a couple of reasons. We do a lot of electrical work here at Open Road and wanted to get across that your wiring should NOT look like this when it is complete. If either of these bikes has on-the-road trouble (a distinct possibility), they may very well find the servicing dealer will charge extra labor and will receive no warranty coverage.

Suddenly a "cheap wiring job" becomes very expensive!
